WHAT IS BIOPHILIC SPACE?
Biophilia is derived from bio = life/nature + philia = love/kinship
It is necessarily related to a well-being, relation between nature and mankind. It can also be translated as “ love for living things”.
This is about five senses & five elements. It refers to basic inclination of a person towards natural forms, organisms. It is also about selection of natural materials and patterns one does.
Creating biophilic space is being practiced in since long. But for built environment we have to use different systems to achieve similar effect.
In the context with built environment, we can consider biophilic space as space that provides view of thick foliage, colours and flowers, clear water and waterbodies, sound of water, filtered ambient light, swaying vegetation and breezes, fragrance, sheltered & safe place, choosing natural materials, forms and patterns and so on..
